Comparison activities develop an understanding of mathematical order. Pattern recognition activities require children to observe and continue patterns preparing them for learning to recognize numbers. Number recognition and counting activities prepare preschoolers for grade school level addition and subtraction exercises.
By giving only a few puzzles at a time it helps the kids to actually focus on the numbers rather than being distracted by having so many puzzle pieces to match up. For new learners, you can include the numbers 1-3 or 1-5 and increase the amount of puzzles available as they improve their counting skills. To differentiate for kids who are not ready to read yet, you can have them focus on the numerals and counting dots.
