In music, counting is a system of regularly occurring sounds that serve to assist with the performance or audition of music by allowing the easy identification of the beat. Commonly, this involves verbally counting the beats in each measure as they occur. In addition to helping to normalize the time taken up by each beat, counting allows easier identification of the beats that are stressed. Counting is most commonly used with rhythm and form and often involves subdivision.

The researchers tested two counting methods in a study of 40 children who played a 100-space board game designed by the researchers to mimic products like Chutes & Ladders. In the first method, referred to as "count-from-1," children started counting from the number one each time they moved a piece. In the other method, students would "count on" from the actual numerical place of their latest landing spot in the game. So a child who had moved her piece 15 spaces would "count-on" from 16 during her next move.

Playing math games with children can be a fun, developmentally appropriate way to spark understanding of big mathematical ideas. Math games also support children’s mathematical habits of mind—and key school readiness skills, such as problem solving, puzzling, and perseverance. When we watch and listen to how children play math games, we learn a lot about the mathematics they already know and what they’re ready to learn. These games support children’s ability to subitize—that is, to immediately see how many without counting, a key factor relating to young children’s math ability.

Regardless of the placement of the objects or how they're counted (order irrelevance), there are still nine objects. When developing this concept with young learners, it's important to begin with pointing to or touching each object as the number is being said.
